Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union
Yirgacheffe coffee is grown mainly on smaller plantations at an altitude of about 1,900 meters above sea level. Many of the plantation owners are members of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), which is made up of 23 different member cooperatives made up of mer than 40,000 farmers. Members of the YCFCU are exempt from the Ethiopian Coffee Exchange (ECX), allowing them to receive a premium for their premium coffee, including Fair Trade and organic certification. The ripe coffee berries are picked by hand, then dried (berry and all) in the sun (natural process).
